Later these 12 gemstones got associated with 12 months or zodiac signs, and common people started wearing them according to their time of birthdate.

While in Eastern Tradition, especially in Indian tradition or more specifically in Hinduism the birthstones are based on the ‘Navgraha’, the celestial bodies, rather than the birth month. So there are ‘Navratnas’(9 gemstones) for ‘Navagrahas’. Often in Hindu astrology, one may be advised to wear more than one gemstone according to celestial forces rather than one single birthstone.
