What does Zodiac mean?

The zodiac is a belt shaped region of the sky that extends approximately 8 degrees north and south of the ecliptic. Ecliptic is the apparent path of the Sun across the celestial sphere throughout the course of the year. The orbital parts of the Moon and major planets are within the belt of the zodiac.

In western astrology, and former astronomy, the zodiac is divided into twelve signs. These twelve signs are: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Each sign occupies 30 degree of celestial longitude and roughly corresponds to the astronomical constellation with the same name.

In the first millennium BC, the Babylonians used astronomy to divide the ecliptic into zodiacal signs. Twelve equal “signs” made up the ecliptic according to Babylonian astronomers. Since Babylonian times, the time of year the Sun is in a certain constellation has shifted due to the precession of the equinoxes, and the point of the March equinox has moved from Aries into Pisces. By the second century BC, the zodiac had been transmitted to Greek astrology. From there, it had been transmitted to the Hindu zodiac. The ecliptic coordinate system is still used in contemporary astronomy to monitor objects in the Solar System. The zodiac wheel comprises of twelve signs – beginning with Aries and ending in Pisces. This modality is displayed in the form of a sphere (or “zodiac wheel”) in the sky that is divided into twelve distinct portions. The sun, moon, and planets transit through each section’s corresponding zodiac sign during the year.

Zodiac Qualities

Each sign in the zodiac is related with one of the three following modalities: cardinal, fixed or mutable. The mode (or modality) of a sign refers to the position in the season in which it is found. Since each modality corresponds to four signs, it is also known as Quadruplicity. You can refer the following table if you wish to know more about the three modalities:
